the officers of the HongKong Regiment that the salary and al- lowances recommended in his minute (viz.,$3,600 per annum` plus exchange compensation, free quarters, $360 per annum for chair coolies, and forage for one pony) would tempt a gazetted offi- cer of the Punjab Police, especially in view of the fact that service in this Colony would, in view of the political situa- tion in China, he looked upon as affording a good opening for

a young man.

4. I see no grave objection to the salary of this Assistant Superintendent being equal to that of the De- puty Superintendent provided the fact is not lost sight of that the latter officer is the senior of the two, but it would be better to increase the salary of the latter than to dimi- nish the proposed salary of the former.

5. In the above circumstances I have to ask

your sanction to take steps with a view to endeavouring to ob- tain the services of a Police Officer from India.

With reference to the last paragraph of

your despatch, I have addressed you on the subject of the Po-
